Capital Investment Recognizes The Important Community Work Of Local
Agencies
TORONTO, May 7 /CNW/ - The McGuinty government is investing more than
$4.7 million in 33 Toronto and surrounding community social services
organizations that serve people with developmental disabilities, and women and
their children fleeing domestic violence.
"This funding recognizes the significant community contributions these
organizations make to the well-being of our citizens and of our province,"
said Minister of Community and Social Services Madeleine Meilleur. "We're
helping community agencies to keep their facilities accessible, safe and
secure for people who need their services."
These grants will go to projects that will help to improve the quality of
life for thousands of Ontarians in Toronto and in communities in and around
the GTA.
"The investment of $4.7 million in capital repairs and maintenance across
Toronto is a positive sign that the Government is committed to ensuring that
people with a developmental disability can live with respect and dignity in
our communities," said Sandy Keshen, President & CEO of Reena.
"Through this initiative, we are helping community agencies concentrate
their efforts on services for people in need," said Thornhill MPP Mario Racco.
"By helping more people with a developmental disability achieve a higher
quality of life, we're investing in a brighter future for Ontario."
The funding comes from the 2007 Ontario Budget, which included additional
measures that will benefit vulnerable individuals and families, such as:- Creating a new Ontario Child Benefit that will help nearly
1.3 million children in low-income families
- Raising the minimum wage to $10.25 in 2010
- Increasing Ontario Disability Support Program and Ontario Works
rates by 2 per cent - a 7 per cent increase since 2003."By supporting agencies that work for people who need a little extra
help, we are helping to build stronger, safer communities for us all," the
minister said.Disponible en français
