TORONTO, Dec. 26 /CNW/ - With the launch of its winter schedule and a new
two-hour family-friendly programming block, The Green Space on Sunday, January
6, HGTV is ringing in the New Year with a 'green' outlook on life. Eco House
Challenge host and environmentalist Tanya Ha offers tips to help you make a
difference.New Years 'Green' Resolutions
1. Set the thermostat to reflect your activity:
Sedentary - e.g., entertaining, reading, watching TV: 20 Celsius
(68F)
Active - e.g., working around the house, vacuuming: 18-19 Celsius
(64-66F)
Sleeping - 14-16 Celsius (57-61F)
Unoccupied - e.g., to prevent pipes from freezing while on vacation:
13 Celsius (55F)
2. Save up to 10 litres of water per minute by installing a water-saving
shower head.
3. Make your home dry-cleaning solvent free by purchasing garments with
easy care instructions. Residual solvents left over from dry cleaning
contribute to unhealthy, poor air quality in the home.
4. Bring the outdoors in by using plants to purify the air. There are
many plants that help to clean the air, including: Aloe Vera, Peace
lily, Rubber plans, Gerbera and Boston fern.
5. Save energy at work by making sure that your monitor is also off when
you power down your computer at night. Or, since laptops can use up
to 90 per cent less energy than desktop computers, maybe give your
boss a little hint that its time for a new laptop...
6. Save money and lend a helping hand to the environment by reducing
fuel consumption. That doesn't just mean by walking - stop idling,
drive smoothly, stop speeding, keep the tires pumped up and keeping
the car regularly serviced are all ways to reduce fuel consumption.
7. Use your compost or green bin. Canadians produce more than
21 million tonnes of garbage annually. About 30 per cent of the waste
our households produce is organic material, which, when composted,
can be recycled into plant food.
8. The next time you replace a bulb, buy an Energy Star qualified
compact fluorescent bulb, which will quickly pay for itself through
reduced electricity costs. For more programming information on HGTV's new The Green Space visit
