Libro Financial Group Announces Student Video Contest Winners


    The prize? Dinner with Al Gore!

    LONDON, ON, May 31 /CNW/ - Libro Financial Group is pleased to announce
the winners of the student video contest held in conjunction with St. Joseph's
Health Care Foundation's "An Evening with Al Gore". Students from both the
Thames Valley District (TVDSB) and London District Catholic (LDCSB) School
Boards were invited to submit one minute videos on the theme of environment
and health to coincide with Gore's visit to London. Two winning videos were
selected from each board. Representatives from each winning team were invited
to take part in tonight's gala dinner and Gore's presentation at the London
Convention Centre. Gore will receive a copy of the winning videos.
    The winners from TVDSB are Emily Pickering, Grade 12, Parkside Collegiate
Institute, St. Thomas for "Inescapable Fate", and Olivia Sadler and Hannah
Lerner, Grade 7, Ryerson Public School, London for "Environmental Crisis".
    According to Mike Newnham, Learning Coordinator, Curriculum, Program
Services at the TVDSB, "We are impressed by the sophisticated way students
handle the new media. Their passion for the topic comes out loud and clear. We
hope these videos will motivate their peers and teachers to impact the
environment in a positive manner."
    From LDCSB, the winners are Daniel Turres, Grade 9, John Paul II Catholic
Secondary School, London for "World's End, Human Extinction", and Amanda Derks
and Andrew Pereira, Grade 10, Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, Strathroy
for "Price of Pollution".
    According to Sharon Gillies, Coordinator - Mathematics, Science and
Technology at the LDCSB, "Asking them to produce videos gave students a whole
new vehicle to show their opinions on this very important topic. It shows they
are all very environmentally aware and concerned about the future of the
planet."

    All students who submitted a video will have the opportunity to view
their work tonight in the Libro Theatre at the London Convention Centre. The
group will also be treated to a live simulcast feed of Gore's presentation.

    About the Winning Videos from TVDSB

    The TVDSB received 37 entries from students in grades 5 to 12 from
schools all over the TVDSB. Students were encouraged to create original
material for the theme of environment and health. They were given a one minute
time limit and couldn't use copyrighted materials without release.
    Scott Doerr, Fanshawe College and Steve Ward, A-Channel, acted as judges.
    The winning entries from TVDSB are Emily Pickering, Grade 12, Parkside
Collegiate Institute, St. Thomas for "Inescapable Fate", and Olivia Sadler and
Hannah Lerner, Grade 7, Ryerson Public School, London for "Environmental
Crisis".
    Judges' comments on "Inescapable Fate" (Emily Pickering, Grade 12,
Parkside Collegiate Institute, St. Thomas): "Truly creative film making. It
has a strong message with a high impact with a striking shock factor and an
original sound track. This video ranks above post secondary quality."
    Judges' comments on "Environmental Crisis" (Olivia Sadler and Hannah
Lerner, Grade 7, Ryerson Public School, London): "Excellent as a work reaching
out to this specific age group. It has natural delivery which is sincere,
positive and the video had good production values by adding motion to still
shots."

Services at the TVDSB, "We are impressed by the sophisticated way students

    The winning videos will be available at www.tvdsb.on.ca as of 5 pm
Thursday, May 31. Mr. Gore will also receive a copy of the winning videos.

    About the Winning Videos from LDCSB

    The LDCSB received 12 entries from the board's secondary schools from
students in grades 9 to 12.
    The two winning entries were selected by a panel of judges, which
included members of the Program Council and the Technology Subjects Council.
The winners from LDCSB are Daniel Turres, Grade 9, John Paul II Catholic
Secondary School, London for "World's End, Human Extinction", and Amanda Derks
and Andrew Pereira, Grade 10, Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, Strathroy
for "Price of Pollution".
    The judges said the students did an exceptional job of producing messages
that have an impact and presented a lot of information, all within a tight
60-second timeframe. The judges found the messages to be creative, inspiring
and insightful. Comments included:

    "It's amazing what they can produce in a short time."
    "It is difficult to make a strong statement in a one minute video. The
    students did it."
