Wal-Mart continues to respond to customer demand for more hours and
MISSISSAUGA, ON, Dec. 25 /CNW/ - In response to continued customer
demand, Wal-Mart Canada announced today that 177 of its 292 stores nationwide
will remain open 24 hours a day from Boxing Day until New Year's Eve. This is
the first time the company has offered round-the-clock shopping during this
period. Customers can confirm locations at www.walmart24hours.ca
Beginning December 1, the company opened 80 stores around the clock for
the holiday season. Due to customer demand, the company added 110 more stores
mid-month, for a total of 190 stores - 80 per cent of all eligible Wal-Marts
nationwide. The company operates 292 stores nationwide, with all 52 Quebec
stores restricted from extended hours.
"There's been a tremendous customer response to our 24-hour store
openings - more so this year than ever before," said Sylvain Prud'homme,
Wal-Mart Canada's senior vice president of operations. "The feedback we're
getting consistently points to the need for flexibility in this day and age."
In recent years, Wal-Mart Canada has tested 24-hour openings during busy
retail periods such as back-to-school and pre-Christmas. This year's decision
to extend the number of stores and number of days for 24-hour operations is a
direct response to growing customer demand for more shopping hours in markets
big and small. In selecting which stores would operate around-the-clock,
Wal-Mart used sales data, market information and local by-laws.
"As customers head out for Boxing Week shopping, we're once again
removing the guesswork around operating hours," said Prud'homme. "We want our
customers to know we're there for them whenever they decide they're ready to
shop. Holidays can be busy, so we're expanding the window in which customers
can get things done."
A recent Maritz Research survey of Canadian customers named Wal-Mart
Canada the top holiday shopping destination for Canadians. The survey noted
that increased holiday store hours was among "winning holiday shopping
differentiators" for retailers.
