OLG cheers on QUEST FOR GOLD athletes competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games
TORONTO, July 27, 2012 /CNW/ - The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) wishes the members of Team Canada reach their dreams for gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games. OLG is proud to support Ontario's athletes through the QUEST FOR GOLD program.
Started in 2006, the QUEST FOR GOLD program was created to help the province's athletes reach their goals and realize their dreams of competing on the world stage. Each year, $10 million in proceeds from the QUEST FOR GOLD lottery is allocated to the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport to support our athletes. The money is used by athletes to offset training costs and living expenses, provide enhanced coaching and training, and augment competitive opportunities.
Since its inception, QUEST FOR GOLD has generated $73 million from its sales to assist approximately 3,000 athletes. This year, of the 118 Ontario athletes competing in London, 90 have directly benefited from financial support from the QUEST FOR GOLD program.
"The QUEST FOR GOLD lottery is an accomplishment we at OLG are proud to share with Ontarians," said Greg McKenzie, OLG's Senior Vice President of Lottery. "Ontario's athletes are succeeding as a direct result of better access to training and coaching, made possible with QUEST FOR GOLD funding."
Hilary Stellingwerff, from Sarnia, Ontario is a QUEST FOR GOLD athlete and a member of the Canadian Track and Field team. She is representing Canada in the 1,500 metre track race in London. "QUEST FOR GOLD funding has been crucial in assisting my athletic pursuits and without it, I wouldn't be able to do all that is necessary to get to a world-class level," said Hillary. "The funding allowed me to train up to 20 hours each week as a full-time athlete plus attend teacher's college and also run in essential competitions. I am so grateful for the support from QUEST FOR GOLD."
Over the next couple of weeks, while we cheer on Team Canada, Ontarians can all feel proud of the support the QUEST FOR GOLD lottery has provided our provincial athletes and know that OLG's efforts have helped to bring these incredible athletes closer to achieving their Olympic dreams.
OLG is a provincial agency responsible for province-wide lottery games and gaming facilities. Since 1975, OLG lotteries, Casinos, Slots, and Resort Casinos have generated more than $34 billion for the benefit of the Province of Ontario. Gaming proceeds support Ontario's hospitals, amateur sport, recreational and cultural activities, communities, provincial priority programs such as health care and education, and local and provincial charities and non-profit organizations through the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
