Statement: Festival Management Committee, The Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival
TORONTO, July 26, 2012 /CNW/ - In light of recent media coverage we wanted to let you know that The 2012 Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival is going forward as planned - several events have already taken place and have been a huge success.
This has been a difficult summer for the City of Toronto as isolated acts of violence have tragically claimed lives. As Torontonians who share this city we have all been affected.
The Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival events draw over 1 million people to Toronto to take part in the festivities and explore and discover this exceptional multicultural city. It is a positive force that brings people together in celebration.
As always, the safety and security of participants, spectators and volunteers is our priority at all times. As part of our annual planning process, we develop a security plan in consultation with emergency services.
This year, we have identified and will implement the added precaution of bag checks for spectators in the grandstand section of the parade route. This is similar to the bag check performed at major sporting events or concerts. This initiative complements today's announcement by the Toronto Police Service of enhanced police presence in the city, including at our main event.
We will do our utmost to ensure that this year's event will be a safe one and will continue to take whatever steps we can as festival organizers to host a fun, vibrant and positive event.
