Youth served by youth centres: A new agreement to facilitate their transition into adulthood

MONTREAL, May 18 /CNW Telbec/ - With some 70 partner organizations present at an event called Renouer des liens, directors of the Direction générale d'Emploi-Québec de l'Île-de-Montréal, the Centre jeunesse de Montréal-Institut universitaire and Batshaw Youth and Family Centres signed a collaborative agreement on May 12, 2011. The goal of this agreement is to establish co-operative mechanisms to support youth served by youth centres by providing them with information on available programs, measures and services and facilitating access to these services.

In practical terms, one month before turning 18, the youth who submits a last-resort financial assistance request or an employment service request is made aware of specific programs offered by Emploi-Québec to promote his/her personal, social and professional autonomy.

This collaborative agreement, which was first created in 2002, was reviewed by the Jeunes des centres jeunesse committee of Engagement jeunesse Montréal for 2010-2011. It provides a blue print that will form the basis of other interventions between youth centres and the employment market.

The Pas à pas vers l'emploi card, which lists all youth centres and socio-professional integration organizations in Montreal, has already been distributed. This tool is designed to better inform workers of the various services offered by partners working with youth served by youth centres in Montreal.

The Jeunes des centres jeunesse committee is made up of the following representatives:

  • Agence de la santé et des services sociaux de Montréal (ASSSM),
  • Batshaw Youth and Family Centres,
  • Centre de santé et des services sociaux de la Pointe-de-l'Île (CSSS Pointe-de-l'Île),
  • Centre jeunesse de Montréal-Institut universitaire (CJM-IU),
  • Direction régionale d'Emploi-Québec de l'Île-de-Montréal,
  • Engagement jeunesse Montréal
  • English-Montreal School Board (EMSB),
  • West Island Health and Social Services Centre.

Engagement jeunesse is a national project from the Stratégie action jeunesse 2006-2009. Its purpose is to promote social and professional autonomy of youths by focusing on qualification and integration into the work force.
