Working without a contract for the past three years - Concordia trades employees on 24-hour strike

MONTREAL, Sept. 7, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Members of the trades workforce at Concordia University, who have been without a contract for more than three years, will have a 24-hour study session on Wednesday, September 7, to protest the slow pace of negotiations.

This tactic, by the plumbers, electricians and other trades - about 60 workers - who ensure proper maintenance of the campus buildings, is intended as a warning shot at the university's administration. "We will not settle for any rollbacks. Our members are not paid as well - by a difference of $2 to $4 an hour - as those who have similar jobs within the university. An institution that finds a way to pay its former presidents $2 million in early retirement incentives should have the decency to negotiate with those who keep the equipment and buildings in good order," pointed out Syndicat des Métallos representative Richard Boudreault.

The group of about 60 employees will set up a picket line on Wednesday at all entrances to the university. This past spring, the unionized workers voted in favour of launching a general strike when the timing was deemed right.

The USW/Syndicat des Métallos, an FTQ affiliate, is Quebec's largest private-sector union. Its members - more than 60,000 - work in all sectors of the economy (mines, metallurgy, industrial manufacturing, the hotel and restaurant business, security, trucking, taxis and more).
