TORONTO, April 4 /CNW/ - Over the weekend, Woodland Primary School in
Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland finished first in an international
contest to win a visit from Jan Brett, one of the most successful
children's book creators of all time. Jan regularly occupies the #1
slot on the New York Times best-seller list and has been beloved in the
publishing industry for over 30 years.
Woodland Primary, which teaches approximately 400 children between
Kindergarten and Grade 3 in a small community of less than 14,000, won
out over 5,700 other schools and libraries from over 20 countries
worldwide in an online competition. Jan Brett plans to visit the
winning school in the 2011-2012 school year.
For the past 10 years, Jan Brett has been running the contest, and the
frenzy of competition has been building with each successive contest.
This year, the total number of entries came in at over 22,000 with
contestants applying from as far afield as Iceland, United Arab
Emirates, Pakistan and Nigeria. Woodland Primary garnered over 2,200 of
Jan Brett said "Congratulations to everyone at Woodland Primary in Grand
Falls-Windsor Newfoundland! I'm looking forward to my first trip to
their beautiful province."
Maureen Hiscock, the teacher that organized the campaign, said "I never
thought when I entered our school in this contest it would become this
BIG. We love Jan Brett!"
Brett is best known for her classic Christmas stories, including The
Hat, The Mitten, The Three Snow Bears and Gingerbread Baby. With over
37 million books in print, there are no libraries or elementary schools
that do not have at least one of her books on their shelves. Her books
have been chosen as "Best Children's Books of the Year" by Newsweek,
The New Yorker, Parents magazine, and Redbook.
