WINNERS OF NATIONAL PICTURES OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED

NEWS PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSOCIATION OF CANADA SELECTS TOP PHOTOJOURNALISTS OF 2010

VANCOUVER, May 30, 2011 /CNW/ - The News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) has announced the winners of its annual National Pictures of the Year (NPOY) award at the 2011 Photojournalism Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

NPAC NPOY organizer, Ric Ernst, was impressed with the depth of submissions in each category and the outstanding quality of work.  "Each nominated piece encapsulates a significant moment in life, whether experienced by one person, or shared by millions at an event like the Olympics," said Ernst.  "The judges found it extraordinarily difficult to select winners, but in the end felt those they chose captured the essence of a moment that will live on."

From Kandahar to Canada, winning photojournalists captured a variety of subjects from an endearing two-year-old with a severe facial malformation waiting for surgery, to Spring Valley Hutterite Colony residents enjoying life's simple pleasures, and a growling wild Siberian tiger.  Each piece resonated with the audience, evoking an instantaneous and profound connection with the subject.
