MONTREAL, April 7 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, unionized workers at Valu-Mart
in Shawville, in the Outaouais's region, held a demonstration in front
of the Montreal's headquarters of Loblaws. They are asking for a new
start of their negotiations which are in a standstill. Exasperated by
the attitude and the silence of their local employer, they want to be
heard directly by the mother company.
The workers are asking that their negotiation be held entirely in
Montreal and not supervised from Toronto, which is the case now. The
Valu-Mart supermarket in Shawville is the only one of that banner in
the province of Quebec. It is located close to the Ontario border where
are the other Valu-Mart.
Why an exception?
The coordinated negotiations in the supermarket sector in Quebec is
doing well and several unions have signed agreements with Loblaws. For
Benoit Boucher, the union's negotiator: " Why the supermarket in
Shawville should be an exception? Shawville is located in Quebec and
should be considered the same way as other supermarkets of similar size
within our province. The union is part of the negotiation round
coordinated by the Fédération du commerce - CSN, and is asking for the
same working conditions that have been agreed by workers of other
supermarkets in the province".
The union demands are mainly those included in the union platform for
other supermarkets. The union only local request is for better security
footwear in the workplace. The difference between both parties are far
apart regarding wages, pension benefits, insurance and the general
terms of the collective agreement.
The 30 employees of the Valu-Mart in Shawville are on unlimited general
strike since december 2nd, 2010. "Our members are on the picket line 7 days a week, 8 hours a
day. We are more than ever determined to obtain better working
conditions, says Karen Cartman, president of the union. "The support we
get from our fellow workers and the CSN will help us in our struggle'',
During the demonstration, Valu-Mart's workers received warm support from
members of the CSN. A solidarity campaign is now underway that will
give financial support to the workers.
The union, le Syndicat des travailleuses et des travailleurs du
Valu-Mart is affiliated with the Confédération des syndicats nationaux
(CSN), the Fédération du Commerce - CSN and the Conseil central des
syndicats nationaux de l'Outaouais.
