Union invites management to rejoin college contract talks

TORONTO, Sept. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - The Ontario Public Service Employees Union has invited negotiators for community college management to return to the bargaining table in a bid to kick-start talks on a new contract for 8,000 striking support staff.

"Today I'm inviting management to pick up the phone and call me," Rod Bemister, chair of the union's bargaining team, told a picket line rally today at George Brown College in downtown Toronto.

"All they need to say is that they're prepared to resume talks."

Later, Bemister said he had faith that management negotiators would return to the table with "an open mind and a fresh approach" to the talks, which broke down Aug. 31 when the two sides failed to reach an agreement.

"Let me repeat what I said on Sept. 1," said Bemister. "We are prepared to return to negotiations at any time and anywhere management wants to meet provided they return with a fresh approach.

"We remain very concerned about management proposals that will erode the good jobs our members currently enjoy, but we won't settle this on the picket line; a settlement must be reached at the negotiating table."

OPSEU represents more than 8,000 full-time, permanent employees at 24 community colleges across the province. Wages, benefits and job security remain the outstanding issues.
