Trend Micro Global Enterprise Survey 2011

Cloud computing growing in popularity despite global concerns over security
Canadian enterprises report less security lapses than global counterparts

OTTAWA, June 7, 2011 /CNW/ - A new global survey of 1200 enterprise IT decision makers from Canada, the U.S, Japan, France and Germany reveals a growing popularity of cloud computing despite current confusion about both its overall benefits and data security.

In the past, security concerns were the primary inhibitors to cloud adoption. Now, performance and availability have equal influence over IT decision makers. As we witnessed in recent data breach incidents -- everything is linked - poor security causes downtime, and contributes to poor performance" says Trend Micro's Vice President of Cloud Security. Dave Aspey.

Cloud Adoption

Overall the adoption rate for overall cloud technologies is highest in United States and lowest in Canada.

  • Compared to their colleagues in other countries, Canadian IT respondents expressed a higher level of concern related to administration/management of cloud services.  56% of Canadian organizations vs 49% of global organizations viewed a guaranteed Service Letter of Agreement (SLA) as important to driving adoption of cloud computing.
  • A specific example - 59 percent of all businesses surveyed are now using server virtualization—a low cost partitioning of physical servers into smaller virtual servers, which saves companies hardware and operating expenses for power and cooling.  In the U.S. it is 70%, 68% in the UK, 61% in Germany, 58% in Japan, and dropping to 47% in Canada.
  • Half of the overall respondents indicated that apprehension over security is a key reason holding back their adoption of cloud technology.  More than half believed shared storage is vulnerable without encryption.

Cloud Confusion

There seems to be widespread confusion about what cloud computing services exactly are.

  • When presented with an extensive list of cloud service providers, 93% of all respondents said they are currently using at least one of them.  However, 7% of these same respondents indicated, on the other hand, that their company has no plans to deploy any cloud computing services.

Cloud Insecurities

About four in ten (43%) responding companies globally currently using a cloud computing service reported a data security lapse or issue with the cloud service their company is using within the last 12 months.

  • Canada was on the lower end of the companies reporting a security lapse at 38 percent; the highest was India at 55 percent, followed by the UK at 48%, Japan at 44%, the US at 39%, and Germany at 35%.

While security is still the major hindrance toward cloud adoption, more enterprises now perceive performance and availability of cloud services to be of near-equal consideration.

  • The top barriers respondents see in adopting cloud-computing services are: concerns over security of data or cloud infrastructure (50 percent) and performance and availability of cloud service (48 percent).

Data in the cloud is vulnerable without encryption

When it comes to safeguarding sensitive data stored in the cloud, enterprises turn to encryption. 85 percent of respondents said they encrypt data stored in the cloud. And before taking the plunge into cloud adoption, more than half of survey respondents said they would be more likely to consider a cloud provider if encrypted data storage were included in the offering.
