Tourists love Montréal, satisfaction survey reveals

MONTREAL, Nov. 17, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Montréal is a favourite of travellers who visit the city. This is one of the findings from a survey conducted on behalf of Tourisme Montréal by the research company Ipsos Descarie, the results of which were published last spring. According to the survey, which polled visitors who stayed in Montréal for two or more nights in 2010, 81% rated their experience an 8 out of 10 or higher, with half of them awarding an exceptional score of 9 out of 10.

"Visitors appreciate the welcome they receive in Montréal and the kindness of Montrealers. The city's legendary joie de vivre and its numerous signature events taking place throughout the year are also highly prized. It is with good reason that these have become our trademarks," states the Honourable Charles Lapointe, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal. "I am also very pleased to see that the nice comments I hear about Montréal when I travel abroad are confirmed by several aspects of this survey. This only encourages us further to promote Montréal and welcome more tourists year after year," concludes Charles Lapointe.

Visitors reported being satisfied or very satisfied with Montréal's ambiance (96%), arts and culture (97%), accommodation sector hospitality and competence (93%), ease of getting around (95%), and entertainment offerings (96%). While travellers from outside of Québec were generally more satisfied than their counterparts from Québec, what is remarkable is that 99% of all travellers polled declared their intention to most likely (87%) or likely (12%) recommend a trip to Montréal to family and friends.

Montréal welcomed some 7.4 million tourists in 2010, an increase of 4.5% in comparison to 2009. Of these, 55% came from the province of Québec, 21% the rest of Canada, and 24% from the United States or elsewhere in the world. Tourist expenditures totalled 2.1 billion dollars in 2010, an increase of 6.5% over the previous year.

Survey Methodology
All respondents were adults (18 years of age or older) who stayed for two nights or more on a leisure trip in 2010. They were recruited in person, after which they responded to the web survey. In total, 2,895 people (of the 13,071 recruited) took the web survey, which has a 2% margin of error. The survey was administered by the research firm Ipsos Descarie, and the results were published in May 2011.

Tourisme Montréal is responsible for providing leadership in the concerted efforts of hospitality and promotion in order to position the destination on leisure and business travel markets. It is also responsible for developing Montréal's tourism product in accordance with the ever-changing conditions of the market.
