The first Marathon de Sport de Montreal raises over $50,000 for Special Olympics Quebec and Canada

MONTREAL, Sept. 12, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The organizers of the first edition of the Marathon de Sport de Montreal announced today that $52,500 were raised thanks to the event held Saturday, September 10, 2011, at the College Notre-Dame's sports facilities. It is the largest sum raised at the first edition of a Marathon of Sport in Canada.

The amount is equally divided between Special Olympics Quebec and Special Olympics Canada.

First held in Toronto 10 years ago, the Marathon of Sport is a fundraising event benefitting Special Olympics Canada, a national organization created in 1969 that has provided positive, successful experiences through sport for thousands of Canadians with an intellectual disability. Special Olympics Canada has successfully registered 34,000 Canadians of all ages and abilities and more than 14,600 volunteers, including over 13,000 trained coaches. The Marathon of Sport is also presented in Halifax, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver.

Over a hundred people participated in the event along with ambassadors Alexandre Bilodeau, Annie Pelletier and P.K. Subban. Speed skaters Isabelle Charest and Tania Vicent as well as Mathieu Darche also contributed to the success of the event.

Sixteen teams of six to ten participants from a same company or group took part in six sports: soccer, kick-ball, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, ball-hockey and relay racing. In addition, each team boasted in its ranks an athlete from the Special Olympics Quebec program.

Annie Pelletier, honorary patron of Special Olympics Quebec since 1998, said: "The Marathon de Sport is much more than just a fundraiser. It allows the athletes from the Special Olympics program to have a sense of belonging, to interact with others, to improve their self-esteem and to become winners."
