THE AFNQL CONGRATULATES THE MEMBERS OF THE NEW CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT AND UNDERLINES THE APPOINTMENT OF AN INNU

WENDAKE, QC, May 20, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL), Ghislain Picard, wishes to congratulate all members of the new Conservative Government. In particular, he noted the appointment of Peter Penashue, an Innu of Labrador. "This appointment is historic and leads me to maintain high expectations for issues affecting First Nations of Quebec and Labrador," says Chief Picard.

The Chief of the AFNQL intends to focus on issues related to Aboriginal rights, education and the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the rights of indigenous peoples. "I will resume the work already initiated with the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, John Duncan and his staff, to ensure improved conditions and better future for our communities", added Ghislain Picard.

"I am counting on the collaboration of the new Federal Government to defend and uphold the rights of First Nations in Quebec and Labrador, especially in the context of different development projects occurring on the territory", he concluded.
