Teacher Appreciation Week - A message from QESBA President Debbie Horrocks

MONTREAL, Feb. 9 /CNW Telbec/ - For 33 years, Anne Tellier has been building character, expanding horizons and brightening futures for students in English public schools. Sometimes, she does it by tossing footballs with her Kindergarten boys at recess. Or by showing that a Smartboard is not just new technology, it's a piece of magic to light a young child's curiosity.  And, when necessary, it's a firm word and an open door that transforms an unhappy bullying incident into a lasting learning moment. For the students, fellow teachers and parents of Dorsett Elementary School in suburban Baie D'Urfé, Anne Tellier is just one reason to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week.

Sarah Olson is another. The village of St. Paul's River on Quebec's Lower North Shore is a long way from Baie D'Urfe. Still, the measure and quality of great teaching transcend that distance. Since 2001, Sarah Olson has been drawing on creative and innovative strategies to engage her students and connect with their parents. . Living in a remote, rural village with no recycling services, Sarah embarked on a huge environmental awareness campaign with her Secondary I and II students last year. She contacted the local shipping company to organize containers to be placed by her two schools, St. Paul's Secondary and Mountain Ridge Elementary in the municipality of Bonne Esperance.  Sarah and her students took on a real-life challenge and in the space of a few months, effected lasting change with her project.

The Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA) invites you to remember that each day, there are 8,000 teachers like Anne Tellier and Sarah Olson who guide, prod and inspire students in English public schools across the province. Working with school administrators, professional and support staff, our teachers perform daily duties that are as diverse as they are challenging. The rewards they reap are ultimately measured in the successes of our children. Can there be a calling more important?

To our teachers across the province, QESBA  joins parents, students, fellow employees and school board members in saying thank you for what you do -- this week and every week.
