Survey finds 75 per cent of Canadian Children Have Snack Envy at School

Walmart Canada Snack Report opens the lid on schoolyard snacking by surveying Canadian children ages six through 11

TORONTO, Aug. 7, 2014 /CNW/ - A study released today by Walmart Canada finds that 75 per cent of Canadian children are experiencing snack envy on the playground. Results found that kids of parents who run out of snack ideas are significantly more likely to make a trade come lunch time.

While mom admits more readily to running out of snack ideas than dad, the survey results found that four out of five parents are stumped when trying to come up with new options for their children. With the top two complaints from those surveyed being that other kids have better snacks, or that their snack is the same every day, Walmart has developed the 2014 Snack Report to help parents pack smarter treats between meals.

"Kids are always looking for the next big schoolyard trend and snacks are no exception," said Lee Tappenden, chief merchandising officer at Walmart Canada. "Knowing this, we wanted to establish a hub of creative, simple snack ideas for kids to make it easy for parents to stay ahead of the trends and to help to curb snack envy."

Walmart knows that the back-to-school period is hectic, and with homework and extracurricular activities in full swing, it can be difficult to fit in all of the necessary shopping. Parents can easily find all of the ingredients they need to make every recipe in the Snack Report at their local Walmart, or on www.Walmart.ca, while they pick up other back-to-school essentials.

With 71 per cent of primary school aged children bringing their snacks home if they do not like them, and nearly 10 per cent giving them away to someone else, it is clear that Canadians could use some snack inspiration.

Survey results also found that 59 per cent of primary school aged children like sweet snacks the most, and while the report features several sweet treats, the pages are full of ideas that will keep everyone's taste buds happy, no matter what type of refreshment they prefer.

"We've developed a number of delicious, clever recipes that will appeal to your child's sense of fun, as well as their ever-changing appetite," added Tappenden. "From sweet and crunchy to savoury and gooey, we've created enough variety to pack something completely different every day of the week."

Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted between July 10th and July 15th 2014 via Legerweb.  A total of n=403 6-11 year olds were interviewed with their parents using an online survey.  A sample of this size would yield a margin of error of +/-4.9, 19 times out of 20. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
