MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 29, 2011 /CNW/ - Sunny Day Energy Inc. has
selected RESCo Energy Inc. as its primary Engineering, Procurement and
Construction (EPC) services provider to develop a portfolio of over 5MW
of construction ready rooftop solar photovoltaic projects across the
Greater Toronto Area. The projects will connect to the grid under the
Ontario Power Authority's (OPA) Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program. Sunny Day
Energy will finance and own the projects, which range in size from
200kW AC to 500kW AC. Development of the first project is already
underway with the remaining projects to be built over the next two
The Sunny Day Energy portfolio represents a very substantial development
in the Ontario market and a huge addition of clean renewable energy to
Ontario's electricity grid. The scale of these projects equates to
27.9% of the total installed capacity of rooftop solar PV projects
completed during the first two years of the OPA's FIT program (17.9MW).
That 17.9MW was also spread over 109 buildings making this portfolio a
substantial increase in the average project size (Source: OPA, Nov. 14,
For the solar industry in Ontario, particularly the manufacturing
sector, a project like this provides assured demand and keeps
production lines running and people employed. This is also a key
employment piece for RESCo Energy. RESCo uses in house personnel for
all EPC services making the Sunny Day Energy portfolio a bedrock of
even flow work over the next two years.
These projects will also become an important tool for electric utilities
in Ontario and other jurisdictions by demonstrating the positive
impacts that large scale solar energy projects can have when embedded
and distributed throughout major load centres (the GTA). Producing
electricity during peak times specifically where it is needed is one of
the major benefits of solar energy.
Sunny Day Energy and RESCo Energy are excited about this partnership and
the role it will play in the growth of Ontario's solar industry. The
two companies will work collaboratively to select major system
components and to design the features of each project.
