MONTREAL, May 11 /CNW Telbec/ - The Annual Kidney Foundation of Canada's
Kidney Walk will take place this year on May 15, in Estrie, Mauricie, Montréal, Outaouais, Québec and Saguenay / Lac-St-Jean, to increase awareness of kidney disease and the need for organ
The Kidney Foundation hopes to attract 1 800 people with the ambitious
goal of raising $195 000, giving hope to people in Québec suffering
from kidney disease.
"When my 10-year old girl, Pénélope, received her kidney in 2004, we
were overjoyed and relieved to be able to see her lead a normal life
like other children her age. This is why it is our duty to come
together to help people with kidney disease and to make people aware of
organ donations," says Louis Charest, The Montreal Kidney Walk Chairman.
Dialysis: an obligation before a kidney transplant
Close to 12 000 people in Québec suffer from end-stage renal disease,
the stage where the kidneys only function at 10% of their capacity.
During this stage, only dialysis - five hours of treatment three times
a week - or a transplant will guarantee survival.
"The increase in cases of hypertension and diabetes, the two main causes
of kidney disease, requires The Kidney Foundation to play a more and
more important role for people fighting these diseases," explains Martin Munger, the executive director of The Kidney Foundation
/ Québec Branch.
Since its foundation in 1964, The Kidney Foundation has allocated more
than $100 million to kidney disease research, allowing thousands of
people living in Québec to see a huge improvement in their quality of
life and to maintain hope for a cure.
Kidney transplant: the only hope
On December 31, 2009, 921 people in Québec receiving dialysis were on
the waiting list for a kidney transplant; the current average wait time
is a little under two years. In the last ten years, 140 people have
died waiting for a kidney transplant.
These remarkable numbers clearly show us that meeting the needs of
people living in Québec who are waiting for a kidney transplant is more
than necessary and vital to improving their quality of life.
It is everyone's duty to help improve the quality of life of people
living with kidney disease.
