TORONTO, Sept. 6, 2011 /CNW/ - University of Toronto administrative and
technical staff will vote Friday on a tentative agreement their union
has negotiated with the university.
The tentative deal was reached over the weekend following lengthy
bargaining sessions between United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1998 and
the university administration.
"It was a very difficult set of negotiations and in the end we were able
to reach a fair agreement that we could take back to our members with a
recommendation for approval", said USW Local 1998 President Allison
The union's bargaining committee is unanimously recommending that
members ratify the tentative agreement when voting takes place Friday.
Union members will be able to review details of the new tentative
agreement at a meeting Wednesday, September 7 at Convocation Hall,
between noon and 2 p.m. Union members at the U of T's Mississauga and
Scarborough campuses will be able to participate in the meeting through
Union members will vote on the new deal on Friday, with voting locations
and times still being finalized.
The new agreement affects more than 3,800 administrative and technical
workers at the University of Toronto.
USW Local 1998 represents the largest number of unionized employees
within the University of Toronto - about 6,000 workers in total. In
addition to administrative and technical staff, Local 1998 also
represents about 2,200 casual employees at the U of T. Contract
negotiations between the casual employees and the university are
expected to begin within the next few weeks.
