Statement - Minister Aglukkaq Applauds Enforcement Officers following Conviction in Narwhal Tusk Trafficking Case

IQALUIT, Oct. 2, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council, today released the following statement in response to news of the resolution of Operation Longtooth with the conviction of Gregory (Greg) Logan for illegally smuggling about 250 narwhal tusks into the United States.

"The illegal trade in wildlife is something our Government takes very seriously. Not only is the Narwhal listed as a protected species in Canada, it is also considered iconic in the North, with important ties to the Inuit community on many levels. I commend the Wildlife Enforcement Officers behind Operation Longtooth on the resolution of the case and their role in protecting the Narwhal from further exploitation by Mr. Logan.

"I offer my sincere thanks to the men and women in uniform who devote themselves on a daily basis to enforcing our wildlife and environmental laws."
