TORONTO, June 17, 2011 /CNW/ - Jack Layton's NDP is set to abandon the
pursuit of a socialist paradise at their national convention this
weekend in Vancouver - will avowed socialist Andrea Horwath abandon her
principles and her party by joining them?
Amongst other policy questions, delegates like Horwath will vote on a
resolution to scrub "socialist," "socialism," and "social democratic" from the party's constitution and policy manual.
Horwath disappointed many in her party this week by waffling on the
NDP's struggle for democratic socialism:
"'socialism,' 'social democrat,' ..the bottom line is people don't
really care about those labels so much I don't think"
(Andrea Horwath, June 16, 2011)
But Horwath's long-professed commitment to socialism is clear:
"we New Democrats won't check our socialism at the door when it comes to
building a better future."
(Andrea Horwath, NDP Leadership Convention, March 7, 2009)
Host: "Are you a socialist?"
Horwath: "Yes I believe I am. I believe I am."
(TVO The Agenda, May 1, 2009)
The Ontario NDP Policy manual seeks "the achievement of a socialist society in Canada." (Policy # 15.2.3 - Read the full NDP platform at www.secretNDPplan.ca)
Horwath will also vote on other key policy proposals from her NDP
brothers and sisters:
Boycott 'Apartheid' Israel
Repeal the Clarity Act
Nationalize the Auto Industry
Nationalize US Steel
Nationalize Big Oil and Gas
Ontarians look forward to learning Horwath's position on these NDP
