Leader in responsible alcohol service training introduces program enhancements

TORONTO, April 26 /CNW/ - Smart Serve continues in its commitment to delivering the highest quality alcohol service training in Ontario by introducing enhancements to its training and testing program. Beginning the week of April 18, Smart Serve launched a new training platform that upgrades how its content is delivered and tested, ensuring that trainees continue to receive high quality and accessible learning that can be applied effectively in the workplace.

"After broad consultation with our stakeholders, we recognized the need to further align our training with the needs of our students," said Verity Dimock, Smart Serve Executive Director. "The climate in which employees must execute responsible alcohol service has evolved considerably over the last several years, making it our responsibility to successfully adapt our training tools."

In collaboration with Smart Serve employees, licensees and industry focus groups, Smart Serve recognized that shifting demographics and increasingly sophisticated e-learning tools would provide opportunities to enhance teaching and testing methods. "There is an increase in trainees for whom English is a second language, technology has changed the way we learn and unfortunate situations demonstrate there is a need for us to emphasize laws, liability and risk associated with over service," explained Dimock.

To reflect changing realities, Smart Serve has since incorporated new web technologies, strengthened training modules, and a new audio track has been added in both English and French.  The course will also be available with Mandarin and Cantonese audio tracks in late May.

"As the hospitality sector continues to change and evolve, so must our training," said George Schmalz, Chair of Smart Serve. "Smart Serve's dedication to enhancing the program will ensure those certified have the knowledge and confidence to uphold the law and keep Ontarians safe."

Over the past 15 years, as many as 900,000 Ontarians have received their Smart Serve certification and this number will be closer to 2.1 million within the next 15 years. Smart Serve believes the enhanced training program will result in more responsible alcohol service, thereby protecting servers and licensees, and ultimately, the public.
