SINGLE-PARENT FAMILIES COMMON IN CANADA'S NORTH

OTTAWA, June 20, 2011 /CNW/ - Canada's North is home to a higher percentage of single-parent families than the rest of the country. In some parts of Northern Canada, 30 per cent or more of families have only one parent in the household, according to the Conference Board of Canada's latest map from the Centre for the North, All in the Family (http://www.centreforthenorth.ca/blogs/herethenorth/allinthefamily).

"The prevalence of lone-parent families in the North leads to greater social support needs from their communities," said Gilles Rhéaume, Vice-President, Public Policy. "Lone-parent families also tend to have lower incomes and therefore greater challenges in achieving a healthy standard of living compared to those families led by married or common-law couples."

In 2006, the five census divisions with the highest percentage of lone-parent families were in the North:

  • Northern Saskatchewan - 37.5 per cent
  • Division 19 Northern Manitoba (North-East Manitoba) - 34.1 per cent
  • Division 20 Northern Manitoba (Thompson-North Central) - 30.5 per cent
  • Kitikmeot, Nunavut - 29.8 per cent
  • Inuvik, Northwest Territories - 29.3 per cent

The five census divisions with the lowest percentage of lone-parent families were all in Southern Manitoba. They are:

  • Division 5 (South West) - 6.7 per cent
  • Division 10 (Whitehorse Plains) - 7.1 per cent
  • Division 3 (Pembina Valley) - 7.6 per cent
  • Division 12 (Beausejour) - 8.1 per cent
  • Division 4 (Pilot Mound) - 8.3 per cent

The map is part of the Here, the North series, which illustrates similarities and differences between Canada's North and South and among Northern regions. The Centre for the North (http://www.centreforthenorth.ca/home_new) is a program of research and dialogue. Its main purpose is to work with Aboriginal leaders, businesses, governments, communities, educational institutions, and other organizations to provide insights into how sustainable prosperity can be achieved in the North. Over its five-year mandate, the Centre for the North will help to establish and implement strategies, policies and practices to transform that vision into reality.
