Saskatchewan students face tuition fee increases for third year in a row

REGINA, SK, Sept. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - Students returning to university and college will be paying three percent more in tuition fees this September. This tuition fee increase comes a year after students in Saskatchewan faced one of the highest tuition fee increases in the country.

"Tuition fees are one of the largest barriers to getting a post-secondary education," said Haanim Nur, Saskatchewan Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students. "Tuition fees are the symptom of government underfunding, not a cure."

Three years after a tuition fee freeze was lifted students have faced over 11 percent in increases. The average tuition fees for students in Saskatchewan are $5,431 for undergraduate students and $3,271 for graduate students. Graduate students also have limited access to provincial research funding in all fields of study.

"Saskatchewan has weathered the global recession and has seen a growth in the GDP," said Nur. "There is no excuse for underfunding post-secondary education."

With a provincial election in November students are looking for commitments from candidates to make accessible post-secondary education a priority.

The Canadian Federation of Students represents students at the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan and more than one-half million students in all ten provinces. The Canadian Federation of Students and its predecessor organisations have represented students in Canada since 1927.
