MONTREAL, Nov. 25, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan's Vaudreuil
alumina refinery in Saguenay has received Ici on recycle! Level 3 certification from Recyc-Québec.
The Level 3 performance certificate is the highest distinction awarded
by this public corporation within the framework of this programme, in
recognition of the efforts made by facilities to manage waste in
exemplary fashion. The Vaudreuil facility had to meet a number of
requirements to achieve this nomination.
"The Vaudreuil facility is the first Rio Tinto Alcan plant to receive
this certification for actions leading to the source reduction, reuse,
recycling, and re-appropriation of waste," Gervais Jacques, chief
operating officer Atlantic, Bauxite and Alumina, Rio Tinto Alcan. "This
is the latest in a series of measures that demonstrate the long-term
commitment of the Vaudreuil plant to sustainable development."
In January 2009, the Vaudreuil plant decided to implement a source
segregation project in its seven production centres and five support
and service centres.
"This is an important project for us. Thanks to the continueed
commitment of its employees, the plant has achieved an exceptional
waste segregation and recovery standard," said Guy Gaudreault, manager
of the Vaudreuil plant. "Today, the various actions implemented at the
plant allow upgrading nearly 95 % of the waste generated. Any
unrecoverable end-waste is sent to a subcontractor responsible for
maximising the final contents."
These initiatives are part of the plant's overall environmental
protection plan aiming to significantly reduce its ecological footprint
through eco-responsible actions that also focus on health and safety.
Located in Jonquière, the Vaudreuil facility is the largest producer of
inorganic chemicals in Canada, with a yearly production in the range of
1.5 million tonnes of alumina and specialty chemical products. Most of
the alumina produced is metal-grade alumina used in primary aluminium
The Vaudreuil refinery is also a world leader in terms of greenhouse gas
emissions and energy efficiency.
