RIMOUSKI, QC, Nov. 2, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR) has been named Canadian
Research University of the Year by the independent consulting firm
RE$EARCH Infosource Inc.
This year, UQAR heads Canada's Top 50 Research Universities List in the Undergraduate category (full-service universities with mainly undergraduate
programs). The list was released by the Toronto firm RE$EARCH
Infosource Inc. Last year, UQAR ranked sixth in this same category.
RE$EARCH Infosource Inc. uses five specific criteria to objectively
determine national winners: total sponsored research income; average
research income per full-time faculty member; total number of
publications in peer-reviewed journals; average number of publications
per full-time faculty member; and a publication impact factor
(established by the Observatoire des sciences et des technologies).
"The results of the RE$EARCH Infosource study demonstrate the quality of
our researchers and their teams as well as the scope of the research
performed at UQAR," says UQAR's rector, Michel Ringuet. "We are very pleased with the recognition UQAR has earned in recent
years, especially in our three areas of research excellence: marine
sciences, nordicity and regional development."
UQAR also ranked second in Canada, in its category, for growth in
number of scientific publications between 2004 and 2009. "The results
released by RE$EARCH Infosource are very meaningful for us," says
Education and Research Vice-Rector Jean-Pierre Ouellet. "Being named a winner is especially remarkable given the underfunding
of Québec universities, and of UQAR in particular—where the type of
research conducted attracts little private funding." In 2010-2011, UQAR
received more than $22 million in grants.
The 2011 ranking demonstrates UQAR's strong growth in research funding
between 2009 and 2010, with a 31% increase. In addition, a RE$EARCH
Infosource study last year showed UQAR to be the Québec university with
the strongest growth in research between 1999 and 2009. Over the last
decade, sponsored research income grew by 350% at UQAR, increasing from
$3.8 million to $17.4.
