Rail Shippers Look Forward to Working with Facilitator

OTTAWA, Nov. 4, 2011 /CNW/ - The Coalition of Rail Shippers (CRS) is encouraged by Monday's announcement by the Hon. Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, appointing Jim Dinning to lead the six-month facilitation process aimed at improving railway service for Canadian industry.

"We are pleased to see the announcement of Mr. Dinning's appointment and the CRS, its member associations, and the shipper community, look forward to working with Mr. Dinning on this important initiative," said Bob Ballantyne, CRS Chairman.

Mr. Dinning will be working with shippers, railways, and other stakeholders to develop the outline or "template" of service agreements that will be available to all shippers to provide for a balanced contractual framework, and a dispute resolution process.

This appointment is part of the government's response to the Rail Service Review Panel's recommendations.  The CRS is also pleased to see the Minister's commitment to follow up with legislation that will confirm the rights of shippers to service agreements and provide a process for establishing such agreements when commercial negotiations fail.

The Coalition of Rail Shippers is comprised of 18 industry associations, representing broad segments of Canadian industry that depend on effective, efficient, and economical rail transportation to compete successfully in domestic and global markets.  The companies represented by the CRS account for over 80% of the revenues of the Canadian Class 1 railways.
