Purdy's Chocolates freshens product line up with new additions and old favourites

VANCOUVER, Sept. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - Purdy's Chocolates is expanding its confectionary line up with the introduction of an all new chocolate creation, Turona, and the return of a time-honoured favourite, Nougatine, as part of its newest program From the Chocolate Kitchen launching September 8, 2011.

Turona is the newest chocolate piece and also one of the most decadent. Crafted in two layers, the first layer consists of Gianduja, a soft puree of almond and hazelnut, and creamy milk chocolate entwined with a French pastry flake. The second layer is a rich dark chocolate truffle made with fresh whipping cream and cocoa. The two-layer piece is enrobed in a decadent dark chocolate.

"Turona's key ingredient is its 65% cocoa which is harvested from a single Peruvian plantation" says Turona creator and Head Chocolatier, Gary Mitchell. "The soil, which previously harvested bananas, retains flavour of the fruit adding a distinct taste. Not only does this make Turona especially unique, using single plantation cocoa is a whole new approach to making chocolate and creating new flavours." Turona is named after a 16th century Spanish confection.

Chocolate lovers are invited to visit their nearest Purdy's Chocolates Shop September 8 - 16, 2011 for a complimentary taste of Turona.

A favourite for many, Nougatine, also returns this September for a limited time only. Originally debuted in 1978 at Purdy's shops, Nougatine's firm, yet slightly aerated, decadent centre consists of whipped egg whites, blended with caramelized sugar and fresh roasted almonds, coated in dark chocolate.

"From The Chocolate Kitchen is a program that introduces the world of the Chocolatier to our customers and gives us the opportunity to share our chocolate knowledge," says Kriston Dean, Director of Retail Merchandising and Marketing. "Customers can explore in our chocolate shops. Whether by reading the new in-store signage or speaking with our chocolate expert staff, you can learn the story of how each chocolate piece is made in our kitchen and its history." Kriston adds, "Purdy's has always been known for quality and attention to detail. While we maintain the success of our long-time favorites, we continually travel the world to find new and innovative tastes to bring to our customers".

From The Chocolate Kitchen will regularly introduce new chocolates and re-introduce time-honoured favourites through the summer of 2012.

"We've got a few really special recipes in development right now. One in particular includes chili pepper" says Gary Mitchell, "I guarantee it will spice up your winter holiday this season" he chuckles. Purdy's develops an average of over 150 new chocolate recipes each year but only a handful are selected to be made available in shops.
