QUÉBEC CITY, May 17, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - Over the last several days,
various regions of Québec have showcased an entrepreneurial dynamism
that is truly inspiring. In fact, the 17 Québec Entrepreneurship
Contest Regional Awards Ceremonies highlighted the outpouring of
creativity and determination of the hundreds of entrepreneurs who are
busy with launching new enterprises, in seven sectors of activity. In
total, 1 077 new companies submitted their applications this year.
"Participating in this type of event encourages new entrepreneurs to
persevere with their business plan in an arduous phase of the process.
At this stage, there are many obstacles and an uncertainty that is
often pervasive. The boost to their morale and the advice they receive
spur them on to bounce back even stronger," said Natacha Jean,
President and Director General of the Québec Entrepreneurship Contest.
The Québec Entrepreneurship Contest Regional Awards Ceremonies also drew
attention to the quality and diversity of entrepreneurial projects
carried out in Québec schools. Hundreds of initiatives from elementary
schools through to universities were honoured at the local and regional
levels. The Student Entrepreneurship division winners from various
regions of the province were those that stood out from the nearly 2 400
projects entered. As Ms. Jean went on to say, "The Contest makes a real
contribution to recognizing just how dynamic those young Québec
students sitting at their school desks are and to encouraging them to
pursue their ambitions and leave the beaten track. The programs that
provide students with positive reinforcement are worth their weight in
gold. The young people are so proud of themselves that they are already
planning other projects for next year!"

Provincial prize-winners to be announced on June 16
The efforts of the Contest's regional coordinators made it possible to
present almost $300 000 in prizes to the winners who were celebrated by
more than 5 000 people across the province between April 15 and May 6.
The 300 winning projects at the regional level are undergoing a
rigorous selection process involving 60 jurors, all experts. The
provincial winners will be announced at the Desjardins Provincial Grand
Prize Gala at the Centre des congrès de Québec on June 16. This event
will bring together 800 guests, the majority of whom will be contest
finalists. "As a presenting partner in the grand finale of this 13th
edition, Desjardins Group is proud to encourage the new generation of
rising entrepreneurs. We want to support young people who create,
invent and take risks to launch a new enterprise and conquer new
markets," said Monique F. Leroux, Chair of the Board, President and Chief
Executive Officer of Desjardins Group.
The Québec Entrepreneurship Contest supports the development of
entrepreneurship throughout Québec. The Student Entrepreneurship
division encourages the creation of projects that contribute to the
development of entrepreneurial qualities that include leadership,
initiative and solidarity in educational institutions from elementary
school through university. With its Business Creation division, the
Contest spotlights the initiatives of entrepreneurs who are in the
first stages of launching their enterprises. The largest in its field,
the Contest has attracted over a million participants. This year alone,
there were almost 54 000 registrants. The Contest receives financial
support from, among others, the Secrétariat à la jeunesse, the
Ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de
l'Exportation, the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport,
Desjardins Group, Rogers and Service Canada. There are more than 30
partners who contribute each year.
