PROSTATE CANCER CANADA CELEBRATES JACK BRILL

Outspoken Advocate and Support Group Organizer chosen as 'Local Hero' for Contributions to Fight Disease that Affects One in Six Men in their Lifetime

HALIFAX, April 28 /CNW/ - Steve Jones, President and CEO, Prostate Cancer Canada and members of the Halifax business community today celebrated Jack Brill as a 'local hero' for his extraordinary contributions to fight prostate cancer.

Jack Brill, prostate cancer survivor and well known advocate and support group organizer, was recognized at the 10th Annual 'Wake Up Call Breakfast' hosted Jim Copeland, TD Waterhouse in collaboration with TD Bank Financial Group.

"Prostate Cancer Canada is proud to celebrate Jack Brill for his courage, inspiration and dedication to winning the war against a disease that impacts one in six men in their lifetime," Mr. Jones said. "Through his personal commitment and dogged determination he has put prostate cancer on the agenda in Atlantic Canada."

Upon acceptance of his local hero award Mr. Brill emphasized the need for men to get "get checked early" for the disease. "Being a survivor I have closely watched the various treatments for prostate cancer. The most important thing I would like men to know - especially men I their thirties and forties - is that the treatment of active surveillance is an option I recommend they look at with their doctor."

The event also featured a special address by Frank Sobey, prostate cancer survivor, Chairman, Crombie REIT and Chairman, Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation.

The Wake Up Call Breakfast is the only Canada-wide business breakfast series dedicated to the fight against prostate cancer. Over the past decade the event has attracted more than 16,000 business professionals and raised nearly $1.9 million for prostate cancer research, awareness, support and advocacy.

Momentum
"The 'Local Hero' award is one in a series of initiatives to advance our goal to create a truly national organization that has the resources and strength in numbers to be an effective voice to affect change," Mr. Jones said.

"This is our time to take prostate cancer to the forefront of attention and bring together support groups with business leaders, government and Canada's great research community to make a significant impact," Mr. Jones added.

In March, PCC opened its first regional office in Halifax and announced a series of initiatives to strengthen the fight against prostate cancer throughout Atlantic Canada. The Halifax office brings together 15 regional prostate cancer support groups under the Prostate Cancer Canada national network. In total, 58 groups across Canada have united under the PCC umbrella.

Peter Mallette, Director, Atlantic Region for Prostate Cancer Canada said the Halifax office will manage five major events in the region this year designed to promote PSA testing and "advance the best thinking and best practices' for the treatment of the disease. As well, the Halifax office will host Prostate Cancer Canada's National Leaders Conference from October 12 to 15.
