Projet Montréal denounces the favouritism shown towards friends of the regime

MONTREAL, Feb. 3 /CNW Telbec/ - The leader of the 2nd opposition at City Hall and  councillor for the Jeanne-Mance district, Richard Bergeron, and Peter McQueen, NDG councillor and financial critic for Projet Montréal, together denounce the favourable treatment given by Gérald Tremblay's Union Montreal administration toward its friends. "With Gérald Tremblay as Mayor, his candidates do better by finishing third rather than by getting elected," affirmed Richard Bergeron.

According to data obtained by Projet Montréal through an access to information request, nine people close to Union Montréal (defeated candidates and/or party friends) picked up more than $1.2 million from Montreal and para-municipal organizations in 2010. These include: André Lavallée; Michel Labrecque; François Purcell; Diane Lemieux; Robert Pilon; Christian Ouellet; Nicole Boudreau; Nicole McNeil and Carl Bernier-Genest. "With Gérald Tremblay and Union Montréal, failure is rewarded," added Peter McQueen.

It should be noted that the average salary of an elected official with Union Montréal is $99,113 versus $91,657 for elected officials with Vision Montréal, and $80,796 with Projet Montréal.

Generous transitional allowances without transition

Projet Montréal also denounces the generous transitional allowances received by defeated Union Montréal candidates, even where they quickly found other employment with the City of Montreal or with para-municipal organizations. "Montreal taxpayers should not have to pay transitional allowances when the defeated candidate quickly finds another position on the payroll of the City of Montreal. This is completely unfair. City Council must necessarily look into these abuses so that the same problem does not reoccur after the next election in 2013," concluded Richard Bergeron.
