Post-Egypt - Political Leaders of Malaysia and Turkey Promote a Democratic, Progressive Vision of Islam

  • Diary Event: Wednesday 23rd February

ISTANBUL, Feb. 16 /CNW/ - Leaders of two of the world's principle Muslim majority democracies, Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Razak and the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Ali Babacan are coming together with leading religious, business and youth leaders on Wednesday 23rd February in a public call for moderate Islam to stand up and be counted.

The call for moderate Islam to speak out against extremism and for the Muslim world to embrace political and economic reform comes as events in Egypt and Tunisia demonstrate the problems of failing to take account of the needs of the people. Current events provide an opportunity to embrace a socially and economically progressive agenda.

Prime Minister Najib, Deputy Prime Minister Babacan, ASEAN Secretary General Dr Pitsuwan and the Grand Mufti of Syria are speaking at the event 'The Global Movement for Justice, Peace and Dignity' at the Conrad Hotel, Istanbul Wednesday 23rd February.

The event coincides with Prime Minister Najib's state visit to Turkey 22-23rd February 2011 where closer political and economic co-operation between the two nation's will be discussed.
