PHOENIX, May 10, 2011 /CNW/ -- PetSmart Charities will host a community adoption event with the goal of saving more than 100 pets in St. Catharines, Ontario on May 11-17, 2011. The St. Catharines community adoption event will be held at the PetSmart store located at 40 YMCA Drive in partnership with Lincoln County Humane Society.
The event is part of 24 community adoption events PetSmart Charities is holding with its local animal rescue agency partners in cities across the United States and Canada throughout 2011. Last year, PetSmart Charities held 21 community adoption events that cumulatively saved the lives of 3,517 pets.
"The Lincoln County Humane Society is excited to partner with PetSmart Charities again for our upcoming adopt-a-thon," said Kevin Strooband, executive director of Lincoln County Humane Society. "In the past, this great partnership has resulted in thousands of successful adoptions and we look forward to many more!"
An estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters in the U.S. each year, but approximately 4 million never find homes. PetSmart Charities strives to bring attention to the availability of pets at shelters and rescue groups and to the benefits of pet adoption.
Proudly sponsored by Purina® PRO PLAN® and MAXX Scoop®, the St. Catharines community adoption event will raise awareness for pets available to adopt in the local community and provide Lincoln County Humane Society with a venue to showcase them. In every location where a community adoption event will be held, adoption agencies will also receive increased adoption rewards from PetSmart Charities for every pet adopted.
"We are very proud to be supporting this important event that finds forever homes for deserving pets," said Mary Siemiesz, Nestle Purina Canada's director of Consumer Communications. "At Purina, we understand that welcoming a new pet into your life is a big responsibility. We want to help make happy homecomings a little easier - so that pets and people can focus on what's important, and establish a bond for life."
