PC Deputy Campaign Director Contradicts Leader

Backpedalling Begins on Dangerous Prisoners in Park Program

TORONTO, Sept. 25, 2011 /CNW/ - Who speaks for Tim Hudak's PC campaign?  Today Hudak's Deputy Campaign Director directly contradicted his leader's previously clear policy on putting prisoners in parks, and demonstrated a total lack of knowledge about how Ontario's jails work.

In a posting on Twitter, Chad Rogers, Deputy Campaign Director proclaimed the program would not be mandatory, but instead would let "corrections staff, guards make the call."

But the PC Platform is clear: "A Tim Hudak government will require provincial prisoners to work up to 40 hours per week in manual labour."

Rogers also made clear that the PCs have done next to no homework on their dangerous prisoners in parks scheme.

In another Twitter posting, Rogers says the PCs feel confident releasing prisoners into parks with kids because "armed corrections officials know how to handle these challenges."

Just one problem - corrections officers in Ontario jails are not armed.  And they didn't have guns during the last 8 years of PC government.  Even if the PCs are now promising to arm jail guards (which is not part of their current plan, or costing) the thought of unchained killers and sex offenders in parks next to our kids will bring no comfort to Ontario parents.

Among those who Tim Hudak would release into our communities are 769 violent criminals convicted of homicide and related offences; serious violent crimes; sexual assaults; miscellaneous offenses against another person; assault.

Time for Tim Hudak and his campaign team to huddle and figure out their next backpedal on their dangerous prisoners in parks scheme.  The Ontario Liberal plan is clear: prisoners belong in jail.
