OPP RELEASE RESULTS OF "OPERATION CORRIDOR"

OPP Report Number of Charges Down from Last Year

ORILLIA, ON, June 17, 2011 /CNW/ - With Operation Corridor 2011 wrapping up on June 15, 2011, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has released the results of this 24-hour initiative that targeted aggressive commercial drivers and unsafe commercial vehicles.

Over the course of the province-wide campaign, OPP officers stopped a total of 1,858 commercial vehicles and laid a total of 320 charges throughout Ontario.  During the Operation Corridor campaign, a total of 86 speeding charges were laid (including 12 speed-limiter charges), 123 equipment charges were laid and 50 commercial vehicles were taken out of service due to equipment issues or hours of service violations by OPP officers.

In comparison, last year during Operation Corridor (2010), 1,769 commercial vehicles were stopped and a total of 433 charges were laid for various Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act offences.  Of those charges, 159 of them were for speeding.  The OPP is cautiously optimistic that with half the number of speeding charges being laid during this year's campaign, that commercial vehicle drivers are making an effort to curb aggressive driving behaviour.

Operation Corridor is one of six provincial and national traffic safety strategies supported by the OPP's award-winning Provincial Traffic Safety Program.  The program addresses high-risk behaviours involving occupant restraint, impaired driving, aggressive driving and distracted driving.

Operation Corridor is an annual border-to-border highway safety initiative that focuses on high visibility, enforcement and education opportunities on highways and roads. The 24-hour initiative ran from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14 to 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday June 15, 2011.
