OPEN LETTER - Re: CFIB's Swift blasts OECTA funding political party: no April fool's joke

TORONTO, April 7 /CNW/ -

Mr. James Ryan, President
Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association
65 St. Clair Avenue East, Suite 400
Toronto, Ontario M4T 2Y8

Dear Mr. Ryan:

At first I thought it was a belated April Fools' joke when I heard that the OECTA was planning to impose a special levy on its members to fund a partisan campaign in the Ontario provincial election.  Unfortunately, it was all too real.  How dare you take my tax dollars and those of other Ontario private sector taxpayers to subvert the democratic electoral process in this province? This is outrageous and, if it is not illegal, it should be.  It is certainly immoral.

If public sector unions were self-financing, you would have the right to do whatever you want.  Of course you are totally reliant on taxpayer dollars for your existence, and have no right to spend them in such an irresponsible and abusive way.  It used to be that public sector workers were banned from being political party members or engaging in partisan activities as they were supposedly servants of the public, not a particular political party. That is the way it should be for a so-called professional public service.  Better you and your members focus your attention and taxpayers' money on tangible improvements to our educational system in the province instead of political electioneering.

The burgeoning costs of the public sector around the developed world are wreaking havoc on government finances and creating the need for abrupt retrenchment in public sector worker compensation, pensions and benefits.  Ontario is not an exception to this financial crisis.  In fact, Ontario is currently the second worst financial basket case of all Canadian provinces.  Government unions such as yours should be looking to be part of the solution, not just creating further problems.

I look forward to your justification of the planned misuse of millions of taxpayer dollars to interfere in the Ontario election.

Sincerely,
