Ontario Road Workers and Contractors Remember Colleagues on National Day of Mourning

TORONTO, April 28 /CNW/ - LIUNA Local 183 and the Ontario Road Builders' Association are remembering workers killed or injured on the job.

"We're doing everything we can to make conditions safer for workers, especially during road construction season," said Michael O'Brien, spokesman for LIUNA Local 183. "That's why we launched an online road safety campaign this week. We want drivers to know they've got a major role to play in making road construction zones safe work places for thousands of people."

In the last 6 months alone, two workers have been killed at road construction sites. Over the past 7 years, 52 people have died in road construction zones across Ontario. There are more than 2,100 collisions on average each year in road construction zones in Ontario.

"Today is an important reminder that we all share in the responsibility of protecting our workers," said Karen Renkema, spokesperson for the Ontario Road Builders' Association. "Safety is our first priority. And our commitment to safety reflects the value we put on the people who build our roads."

The National Day of Mourning, held annually on April 28, was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, eight years after the day of remembrance was launched by the Canadian Labour Congress. The Day of Mourning has since spread to about 80 countries around the world and has been adopted by the AFL-CIO and the International Confederation of Free Trade.
