Ontario Liberal Plan Protected Over 400,000 Auto Sector Jobs
BRAMPTON, ON, Sept. 30, 2011 /CNW/ - When the last global recession hit,
Premier Dalton McGuinty acted quickly with the federal governments of
Canada and the United States and today Ontario is the top auto maker in
"Ontario builds more cars than any other place in North America, and the
industry provides over 400,000 good jobs for Ontario families,"
McGuinty said. "Others would have cut those people loose — we chose to
act, and in challenging times, we'd do the same thing again."
Ontario provided $4.8 billion in the restructuring of GM and Chrysler.
In May, Chrysler repaid their loan in full — six years ahead of
schedule. Support for GM and Chrysler helped protect Ontario's entire
auto sector from collapse, both the other automakers and suppliers.
Many suppliers would not have survived the loss of GM and/or Chrysler
and would not have been in a position to continue supplying Ford,
Toyota and Honda in the province.
"When the chips were down, we had the backs of auto workers and their
families," said McGuinty. "They rose to the occasion and have put us
back on top. We showed our confidence in Chrysler and today Chrysler
continues to demonstrate its confidence in Ontario."
Ontario is the number-one producer of jobs in Canada, and the best at
turning foreign direct investment into jobs for Ontario families. But
there's still a lot of uncertainty in the global economy.
"Our auto-sector is back on track and I want to thank Ontario's auto
workers for all their hard work and determination," said McGuinty.
"Just as we weathered the last recession, we will continue to stand
strong, moving forward, together."
The Hudak PCs opposed government investment in the auto sector. They
have $14 billion in unfunded giveaways and tax cuts that would mean
deep cuts to hospitals and schools. The Horwath NDP would introduce a
crushing $9 billion in job-killing taxes. Both would take Ontario off
track at the worst time.
"Now is not the time for experimentation or political expedience. We
need strong, steady leadership. Only the Ontario Liberals have a plan
to move us forward, together," McGuinty said.
