ONLINE FILERS ARE AMONG THE MOST EAGER TO FILE THEIR TAX RETURN

But one in five online filers fear the tax man's audit

CALGARY, April 12 /CNW/ - With the introduction of NETFILE by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) 10 years ago, the online tax filer has emerged as one of the most eager groups to submit their tax return compared to others using a tax professional or accountant, according to the recent poll by Leger Marketing for H&R Block Canada.

"Nearly nine in 10 of the online filers said they would be submitting their tax return before April 24th," says Cleo Hamel, senior tax analyst, H&R Block Canada. "It is surprising because when people think of taxes, they tend to think about procrastinators. But our survey showed that the majority Canadians file on time - mainly because they want to get their tax refund back as soon as possible."

However, the NETFILE system may also provide procrastinators another excuse as 33% of procrastinating online filers said being able to file at the last minute via the Internet was why they were waiting.

Other interesting notes on Canadian tax filers include:

  • Quick turnaround: Half of online filers say they file on time because they want to get their money back as soon as possible (50% versus only 42% of those who file with a tax professional)
  • Men versus women: Four in 10 men use online tax programs or software to complete their returns. Women are most likely to hire a tax professional to help with their tax return (48%)
  • Most tech-savvy: Albertans and Ontarians are more "tech-savvy" filers than Quebecers with 44% and 39% using software or filing online versus only 29% of Quebecers. Quebecers are more likely to file using a tax professional or accountant (51%). One in five of those living in BC, Manitoba and Saskatchewan file using pad and paper (approximately 20% each)
  • Audit Anxiety: Residents of Ontario or the Prairies (18% and 19% respectively) as well as those 18 to 44 (19%) are more likely to say being audited is one of their biggest fears when it comes to filing their taxes. Atlantic Canadians (7%) are less worried about being audited. One in five online filers fear being audited by the CRA.

"No one wants to be reviewed by the Canada Revenue Agency but you may be picked at random, or you claimed a credit that is more likely to be reviewed," explains Hamel. "Once you sign your tax return, you are responsible for the filing so make sure you have the receipts and paperwork to back up all your claims in case the CRA asks for documentation."
