ON THE FRONTLINE: BRINGING HOPE TO CANADIANS LIVING WITH DIABETES

Canadian Diabetes Association recognizes its world-class volunteers

TORONTO, April 7 /CNW/ - In celebration of National Volunteer Week, the Canadian Diabetes Association would like to thank its thousands of volunteers for their commitment in supporting the more than nine million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes.

"Our volunteers are passionate, because many are personally affected by diabetes.  Some are caregivers, healthcare professionals, and many are living well with diabetes," says Michael Cloutier, President and CEO, Canadian Diabetes Association.  "The success of the Association relies heavily on our volunteers.  We thank them for joining us in the fight against diabetes."

This year, Volunteer Canada has chosen the theme 'Passion. Action. Impact.'  This theme is especially appropriate in describing the thousands of Association volunteers.  Their passion translates into action and impact through their amazing contributions including developing nutrition resources, piloting risk assessments through our public education events, advocating on behalf of people with diabetes for more comprehensive coverage for drugs and supplies and raising much needed funds through our Communities for Diabetes Campaign.

Volunteers such as Margaret Sutherland of Kamloops, British Columbia, who lives with type 2 diabetes and uses an insulin pump and who also facilitates a local support group delivering Learning Series presentations in her community says, "I volunteer for the Association because it not only gives me a chance to give back through support groups, displays and community presentations; it also keeps me on track with my own day-to-day management.  I feel a passion for sharing the story of diabetes and hope that I can reach some who have fallen through the cracks of the medical system and get them in touch with the help they need."
