Leading-edge GammaFIT™ design offers affordability, scalability for
OTTAWA, June 9, 2011 /CNW/ - Nordion Inc. (TSX: NDN) (NYSE: NDZ), a
leading provider of products and services to the global health science
market, today announced it will be unveiling details of its new
Flexible Irradiation Technology (GammaFIT) modular irradiator system.
The technical presentation of the design will take place at the 2011
International Meeting on Radiation Processing (IMRP), the biennial
gathering for members of the International Irradiation Association.
With its commercial release to the market anticipated later this year,
the GammaFIT system will be an industry innovation. This new system
will deploy a modular design that provides end users the flexibility to
add to and configure the irradiator to grow and change with their
processing volume and needs. Using a single shield design, Nordion's
gamma experts have created four configurations—research and
development, tote, carrier and pallet—to serve a wide range of product
sterilization needs, from medical devices to food to cosmetics.
"Nordion has been a world leader in gamma sterilization for more than 40
years, and our investment in this innovative new product demonstrates
our continued strong commitment to this industry," said Peter Covitz,
Nordion's Senior Vice President of Innovation. "Many smaller companies
are discouraged from entering the sterilization business because of the
large initial capital investment in equipment. We believe the GammaFIT
is a more accessible product that can open up new markets for Nordion,
particularly in Latin-America and Asia."
Nordion is proud to be the regional sponsor of IMRP 2011, which will
host more than 400 delegates from around the world in Montreal, June
13-16. Nordion is hosting the Gala dinner and is organizing a tour for
delegates at its state-of-the-art Canadian Irradiation Centre, located
just north of Montreal in Laval, Quebec. Nordion staff will also give a
series of presentations on various technical and business topics
related to irradiation, including low-temperature irradiation,
pharmaceutical product processing, lifecycle management for Cobalt-60,
and new irradiator designs and emerging applications. Visit www.nordion.com/imrp for more information on Nordion's participation at IMRP 2011.
About gamma sterilization:
Gamma sterilization is commonly used to irradiate a wide range of
products and materials, from fruit and spices to pharmaceuticals and
cosmetics. It works by exposing the product to radiation from a
Cobalt-60 source for a predetermined period of time. This kills insect
pests and reduces harmful bacteria such as Salmonella and E.coli.
