New online resource provides personal menopause symptom score; helps women know if they're in menopause

"I seem to be more irritated than usual - is this menopause?"
"I get hot for no reason and wake up bathed in sweat - this must be menopause, right?"
"I'm gaining weight for no reason. Guess I'm starting menopause?"
Wouldn't it be better to know than to guess?

TORONTO, Sept. 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Based on year-over-year surveys of more than 40,000 Canadians, Toronto Dr. Elaine Chin has developed a Menopause Symptom Profiler to help women know if they're in menopause, and what to do to manage this natural phase of their lives. It's online and it's free for anyone to use.

"We've been telling women for years they don't have to suffer through menopause yet this is the first made-in-Canada, do it yourself tool to help guide them to know whether the symptoms they're experiencing are menopausal - or something else," says Dr. Chin. "In either case, you want to know what's going on so you can take preventative health action."

While some Internet menopause quizzes do exist, none are as comprehensive; none have a base group like Dr. Chin's to compare against; nor do they provide recommendations to manage symptoms and ease the transition through menopause. Dr. Chin has been changing the way doctors and patients look at menopause ever since launching the first integrated MD and naturopathic doctor practice focused on women's health (Beresford Clinic, Trillium Health Centre, 1997).

Today, the Symptom Profiler asks women about common and not so common symptoms and gives them a menopausal score.  These scores place a woman's results into one of three symptom 'zones'. A green zone score suggests a woman hasn't started menopause; a yellow zone suggests she could be experiencing some menopausal symptoms; and a red zone score shows her symptoms are stronger or higher than 75% of other women in her menopausal age group, so she could be in menopause. The score prompts a set of corresponding recommendations for improved health.
