Venue: Canadian War Museum in Ottawa

TORONTO, Feb. 23 /CNW/ - The country's top prizes for journalism will be handed out during the 62nd National Newspaper Awards ceremony in Ottawa on Friday, May 13.

The event is being held in the LeBreton Gallery in the fabulous Canadian War Museum, a most unique and, some might say, appropriate venue in these times.

A special National Newspaper Awards Governors' Award will be presented to the Associated Press's award-winning Afghanistan-based journalist Kathy Gannon, a Canadian from Timmins, Ontario.

The event is expected to attract a large contingent of publishers, editors, and journalists as well as corporations and people with a special affinity toward in newspapers.

Our emcees will be two of the most respected journalists in Canada, political columnist Chantal Hébert of the Toronto Star, and Robert Russo, Ottawa bureau chief for The Canadian Press.

The gala will be a fast-paced and entertaining evening to honour the finalists in each of the 22 award categories. Each of the finalists will be introduced in video form and the surprise winner of each will be announced.

Prominent newspaper personalities, including war correspondents from the past and present, will serve as presenters of the awards.

At the museum's official 6 p.m. close to the public, the NNA host reception will begin in the museum's foyer. The awards banquet will begin at 7 p.m. in the LeBreton Gallery, which houses dozens of historic military vehicles and artillery artifacts that can be viewed during the wrap-up reception following the awards presentations. The Gallery is a short stroll from the museum's foyer.

Tickets for the NNA awards show and banquet are $180 each, plus HST ($203.40). Tables of 8 can be purchased for $1,440, plus 13% GST ($1,627.20). To reserve, contact Lauraine Woods, NNA Administrative Assistant, at 416-923-3567, ext. 228 (info@nna-ccj.ca).

For those who can arrive earlier in the day or plan to stay over, visiting the Museum's many exhibits can be a great experience in understanding the evolution of the various wars that have impacted on Canadians. See www.warmuseum.ca for hours and admission details.
