National Engineering Month 2012: Design the Future

OTTAWA, Feb. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - Engineers design, build, and maintain the things that connect communities, drive our economy and keep Canadians healthy and safe. They shape our future with forward-thinking designs, cutting-edge developments and new technologies. Engineers prove that if you can dream it, you can do it.

Organized by the profession's 12 provincial and territorial regulatory bodies, teachers, faculties, volunteers and university students, National Engineering Month is an annual celebration of Canadian engineering excellence that promotes engineering as a career choice to youth. Throughout the month of March, events such as design competitions, robotics demonstrations and science and engineering fairs will teach young Canadians how to use math, science, technology and creativity to generate things that were once thought impossible.

The theme of National Engineering Month is Design the Future. Along with an event listing for each province and territory, the National Engineering Month website features engineer profiles, examples of great Canadian engineering achievements, and games and puzzles.

"National Engineering Month helps foster an early interest and understanding of what engineering is and the good work engineers do each and every day. Students discover that engineers use imagination and innovation in addition to math and science to help creative positive change in the world," said Engineers Canada President Brent Smith, FEC, P.Eng. "The activities are an excellent way to encourage the creativity and vision of today's youth, and we hope inspire them to become engineers. It is so important for them to learn this early, because today's students are the engineering leaders of tomorrow."

Yes Mag, an award-winning Canadian youth science magazine for kids aged 10 to 15, is the official sponsor of the National Engineering Month website. National Engineering Month partners are the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Canada, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students.

Engineers Canada is the business name of the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers and is the national organization of the 12 provincial and territorial associations that regulate the practice of engineering in Canada and license the country's more than 250,000 members of the engineering profession.
