MUSIC LEGEND ROBBIE ROBERTSON TO CHRONICLE HIS PERSONAL AND MUSICAL ODYSSEY IN MEMOIR SET FOR NORTH AMERICAN PUBLICATION BY THE KNOPF RANDOM CANADA PUBLISHING GROUP AND CROWN

TORONTO, April 11 /CNW/ - Robbie Robertson, one of the premier guitarists and songwriters of the rock era, will recount his eventful personal and musical journey in a memoir to be released simultaneously in Canada by The Knopf Random Canada Publishing Group and in the U.S. by Crown Publishers. The book, which is as yet untitled, will be issued in print and digital formats. A publication date has not yet been set.

In his book, Robertson will chronicle in intimate and colorful detail his childhood as the son of a Canadian Mohawk mother and Jewish father; his precocious early music career, including his formative time with  Ronnie Hawkins as a member of the legendary rocker's backup band The Hawks; his adventurous solo journey to the American deep south as a teenager; the formation of The Band, including his account of The Band's role in Bob Dylan's groundbreaking and then-controversial "electric" world tour in 1966; and his later work with Dylan, who famously praised Robertson as, "the only mathematical guitar genius I've ever run into who doesn't offend my intestinal nervousness with his rearguard sound."

Robertson will also describe the making of the seminal album Music from Big Pink; the eventual breakup of The Band; the making of the film The Last Waltz with Martin Scorsese; and his later solo and collaborative work with other musicians and filmmakers. In narrating his life in his own distinctive voice, Robertson will create an autobiography that will be as revelatory as his songs have been and that will offer new insights into the history of rock music and the mind of one of the most significant artistic voices of our time. He is a recipient of the Order of Canada and will soon be honoured by Canada Post with a national commemorative stamp. Robertson's latest album, How To Become Clairvoyant, was released to great acclaim on April 5th.

The announcement was made today by Louise Dennys, Executive Publisher, The Knopf Random Canada Publishing Group and Molly Stern, Senior Vice President, Publisher, Crown Publishers.

Louise Dennys acquired Canadian , electronic book, and first and second serial rights in partnership with Crown Publishers from Robbie Robertson's agent, Ryan Fischer-Harbage of The Fischer-Harbage Agency.

Said Dennys, "When I met Robbie Robertson, and listened to his stories, it was clear that only he should tell the story of his life - a story that takes us through the most tumultuous and exciting musical era of our times, and the many larger than life musicians who inhabited it so powerfully. Through the birth of rock he was one of the greats, he know and played with many. He is a legendary musician and a legendary Canadian. Robertson's insight into the times comes from being a central player in that world. His passion for North American Native music pays tribute to his Mohawk roots that mean so much to him. Robbie Robertson will be telling us a remarkable and entertaining story in his long-awaited autobiography.

One of the most influential songwriters and performers of the rock era, Robbie Robertson was born in 1943 in Toronto, Ontario. He has been inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and was  named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine   He is best known  as the guitarist and primary songwriter for The Band, for which he wrote such classics as "The Weight," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"  and   "Up On Cripple Creek,"  among many other songs.
