Murray recognized with NSSBA's highest honour

DARTMOUTH, NS, May 25, 2011 /CNW/ - The Nova Scotia School Boards Association (NSSBA) is pleased to announce that Brian Murray is the recipient of the 2011 Montgomery Award. He will be receiving the award on May 27, 2011 at the association's 57th annual general meeting.

As a relatively new member to school boards, Brian has demonstrated exemplary dedication to the Strait Regional School Board (SRSB). In the last two and a half years, he has been the chair of the attendance committee, is currently the chair of the audit committee, and has actively participated on nine other committees.

"As a former RCMP officer, Brian recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education for citizens, and the strategic role the school boards of Nova Scotia fulfils to achieve that important goal," says SRSB chair Mary Jess MacDonald.

Brian is an advocate for all students in the Strait Region and promotes the board's mission statement of 'excellence in lifelong learning'. Brian seeks methods of self-improvement that will benefit the education system, and promote the board's goals and objectives. He understands that to be an effective school board, members must seek solutions and meet challenges that will enhance student success and educational excellence.

The Montgomery Award was developed to recognize outstanding school board service on both the local and provincial level that results in positive change for students. The award is named after the association's first president, the late Hector Montgomery, who founded the NSSBA in 1954.

School boards across the province were invited to nominate a member, and an external panel made the selection. The panel was chaired by Rick Piper, director of corporate accounts for Medavie Blue Cross. He was joined by Chris Conrad, regional sales manager, Trade Centre Limited; Ross Lloy, Talbot Marketing and Jennifer Burke, director of sales and marketing, Best Western Plus Dartmouth Hotel & Suites.

The NSSBA is the provincial voice for school boards.
