DARTMOUTH, NS, May 25, 2011 /CNW/ - The Nova Scotia School Boards
Association (NSSBA) is pleased to announce that Brian Murray is the
recipient of the 2011 Montgomery Award. He will be receiving the award
on May 27, 2011 at the association's 57th annual general meeting.
As a relatively new member to school boards, Brian has demonstrated
exemplary dedication to the Strait Regional School Board (SRSB). In the
last two and a half years, he has been the chair of the attendance
committee, is currently the chair of the audit committee, and has
actively participated on nine other committees.
"As a former RCMP officer, Brian recognizes the importance of a
well-rounded education for citizens, and the strategic role the school
boards of Nova Scotia fulfils to achieve that important goal," says
SRSB chair Mary Jess MacDonald.
Brian is an advocate for all students in the Strait Region and promotes
the board's mission statement of 'excellence in lifelong learning'. Brian seeks methods of self-improvement that will benefit the
education system, and promote the board's goals and objectives. He
understands that to be an effective school board, members must seek
solutions and meet challenges that will enhance student success and
The Montgomery Award was developed to recognize outstanding school board
service on both the local and provincial level that results in positive
change for students. The award is named after the association's first
president, the late Hector Montgomery, who founded the NSSBA in 1954.
School boards across the province were invited to nominate a member, and
an external panel made the selection. The panel was chaired by Rick
Piper, director of corporate accounts for Medavie Blue Cross. He was
joined by Chris Conrad, regional sales manager, Trade Centre Limited;
Ross Lloy, Talbot Marketing and Jennifer Burke, director of sales and
marketing, Best Western Plus Dartmouth Hotel & Suites.
The NSSBA is the provincial voice for school boards.
