MISSING: The NDP's Billion Dollar Promise to Students

TORONTO, Sept. 26, 2011 /CNW/ - According to the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), the NDP have promised that, if elected, they will raise the per-student funding to more than the national average.  That's a $1 billion promise. Every year.

But in the costing document the NDP released yesterday, there wasn't a single penny set aside to back up that promise.

"Did the NDP mislead students, or did they simply forget to provide costing for their billion-dollar-per-year promise?" asked Greg Sorbara, Liberal candidate for Vaughan. "Either the NDP is so cynical that they're making promises behind closed doors that they have no intention of keeping, or they're completely incompetent and can't keep track of their commitments."

"Regardless of why the NDP isn't including billion-dollar commitments in their costing, the fact that they only released this well past the mid-way point of the campaign and after voters have started casting ballots is an insult to Ontarians," continued Sorbara. "This document is a day late and a dollar short - or more accurately, a billion dollars short."

FUNDING & QUALITY

"The NDP has promised to invest in the post-secondary education sector, if elected, and raise Ontario's per-student funding to above the national average. They also commit to creating a multi-year framework that ensures that money is available to hire more tenure-track faculty members to improve quality."

Sorbara has written to the CFS and asked them to correct the record.

OPEN LETTER

Ms. Sandy Hudson
Chairperson, Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario
180 Bloor Street West, Suite 900
Toronto, Ontario  M5S 2V6

Dear Ms Hudson,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party with respect to the report card prepared by the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) on each party's Post-Secondary Education platform.

You have included in your report card the following notice:

"Each of the report cards have been created with the most up-to-date content at the time of printing.  If there are additional announcements that affect students throughout the campaign period, the report card may change accordingly."

Accordingly, I wish to bring new information to your attention.  We believe this new information demonstrates conclusively that the NDP have misled the CFS on its election platform and we are asking you to downgrade your score for the NDP accordingly.

As you are aware, the CFS provided the NDP with an "A" for the commitments it made for "funding".  Your report card explains that this grade was earned on the following basis:

"The NDP has promised to invest in the post-secondary education sector, if elected, and raise Ontario's per-student funding to above the national average. They also commit to creating a multi-year framework that ensures that money is available to hire more tenure-track faculty members to improve quality."

You will know that this promise would cost upwards of $1 billion annually.

On September 25, 2011, the NDP released its platform costing.  After careful review of the information provided by the NDP it is clear for all to see that they have failed to include even a penny of new funding to pay for their commitments to you.

In fact, the only two references in the NDP costing document to post-secondary education prove the Ontario Liberal Platform allocates $121 million more to post-secondary education than the NDP does ($486 million versus just $365 million).

Our commitment to students is significant.  It's progressive.  And unlike the promises the NDP made to you, it is fully costed in our platform.

We are confident that an independent and non-partisan review of the NDP costing document can only lead you to conclude that the NDP has no intention of fulfilling its promise to you.  We therefore request the CFS to reconsider the grade it has provided the NDP and to take whatever steps are necessary to inform Ontario students of their failure to put money where their mouth is.

Sincerely,
(original signed)
Greg Sorbara
Campaign Chair
