Mass picket line at Finch station today steps up York Region transit strike

TORONTO, Nov. 24, 2011 /CNW/ - Hundreds of striking York Region transit strikers are at the Yonge-Finch subway station this morning in response to complaints by Conservative MPP Frank Klees that he hadn't seen much picketing in the York Region Transit (YRT) strike.

"Mr. Klees wants to see picket lines, here we are," said Bob Kinnear, president of ATU Local 113, which represents 220 striking YRT Viva workers.

The picket line will be maintained throughout the morning rush hour.

ATU Local 1587 president Ray Doyle said that the union's strategy will change from public information to public demonstrations. "We have generally avoided inconveniencing the travelling public with picket lines but that strategy seems to annoy Mr. Klees. No problem. We will correct that."

Local 1587 represents 250 striking workers from Miller Transit and over 90 from First Student.

Today's massive picket line is a sign of things to come in the strike, say the union leaders. More such actions are planned in the days to come.

"The companies have refused our offer of stopping the strike immediately if they agree to arbitration and the York Region politicians are siding with the companies in this matter," said Doyle.

"We offered labour peace but they want war," said Kinnear. "What more can we do?"
